Maternity Wedding Dresses: How to Dress You & Your Bump

Brides often find dress shopping a little bewildering — all those silhouettes, fabrics and details. As an expectant mother you have an extra challenge, with more to consider while carrying your little one. The good news: there's a stunning selection of maternity bridal styles today, and even non-maternity gowns can be customized to suit a bump. Forget the frumpy maternity dresses of your nightmares — you can wear a gown you actually love.

In this guide we share how to find the perfect maternity wedding gown: a style that lets you move comfortably, feel great and enjoy an ultra-feminine silhouette. Let's get into it.

What Makes a Great Maternity Bridal Dress?

A good maternity dress should love you and your bump, and stay flexible enough to feel comfortable now and in a few months' time. Comfort matters as much as elegance — a wedding day is long and involves far more moving around than brides expect, so your whole ensemble should feel good, not just look good.

Flexibility is essential: your body will change over the coming months, sometimes without much warning, and your gown needs room to adapt and embrace your new shape rather than stifle it.

Finally, celebrate your little one. It's tempting to cover the bump, but you and your bump should share the spotlight in natural harmony — a good maternity gown gives you both that glow.

Which Fabrics Work Well on Maternity Dresses

Fabric is especially important for maternity wear. Avoid restrictive materials — whether bump-skimming jersey or a light chiffon, the fabric should allow easy movement, either stretching with you or flowing freely. Chiffon is our maternity pick. You should feel held, not held back.

Wear lace sparingly. You can absolutely wear it, but choose a cut that skims the bump with enough give to shift as your pregnancy progresses — ideally with a stretchy layer underneath. We'd suggest appliqués over all-over lace, or an empire-line lace bodice with a tulle skirt for the best of both worlds.

Breathable, flowing fabrics like chiffon keep a maternity gown comfortable all day.

Great Maternity-Friendly Silhouettes

The empire line is, in our humble opinion, still the best shape for pregnant brides — timelessly elegant, sitting just below the bust before flowing into a sophisticated sweep that gives baby plenty of room. It looks especially glamorous in tulle, and works well in chiffon or crepe. An A-line flatters every bride and works beautifully on pregnant ones, its gentle transition from bodice to skirt acting like a soft hug for the bump.

Prefer to showcase your shape? A maternity maxi in stretchy jersey flatters the figure without masking it, and a bridal jumpsuit — a flared-leg, V-neck ivory style with plenty of bump room — is a modern favorite that keeps baby secure while celebrating your figure.

An empire or A-line shape hugs the bump securely without any pressure.

Not a dress person? A bridal jumpsuit is comfortable, contemporary and endlessly photogenic — and increasingly offered by designers.

A Few Final Maternity Tips

Size up your gown and listen to your bridal salon — if they recommend going a size up, do it. All gowns need alterations, and taking a dress in is easy; letting one out has limits. A rule of thumb: one size up if you'll be 3–5 months pregnant on the day, two if it'll be closer to 6.

And remember, your bump is the greatest accessory — hold back on oversized detailing that pulls focus, and keep things simple and elegant. Track fittings, due dates and to-dos in one place with a free wedding checklist.
