Beach Wedding Dresses: Find the Perfect Destination Bridal Gown

For us, finding the dream beach wedding dress is just as important as the setting itself — because who wants to look back on their portraits and not totally adore what they were wearing? But choosing the right destination gown isn't always plain sailing. A casual, beach-appropriate dress to walk down the aisle in can be far harder to find than a classic wedding gown.

Beaches are unpredictable, and your gown needs to cope with whatever sand, sun and wind is thrown at it. A few things have to be considered on a beach-bridal shopping journey if you're to feel truly comfortable on the day — and still look incredible.

Over the years our team has helped countless brides find their perfect destination dress, and here we share that experience: the aesthetic to aim for, the best dress shapes and fabrics for sand and sun, and how to complete the look. Once the dress is sorted, keep the rest of the day on track with a free wedding checklist.

Start With the Silhouette

No matter where you marry, we always suggest starting with the silhouette — gown shape plays a vital role in how beach brides look and feel. There's a perfect silhouette for every bride, and finding it makes the rest of shopping so much easier.

The A-line is the most popular shape by far and flatters practically everyone: fitted on the bodice, then flaring gently from the waist for a classically feminine look. It's our go-to for a beach setting because the flowy skirt is breathable and stunning in the breeze. A sheath offers a more streamlined, curve-skimming silhouette — ethereal in a lightweight fabric. The empire line, cut just under the bust, keeps you cool and is one of the most flattering shapes for curvy and plus-size brides.

A streamlined sheath skims the curves and feels effortless by the sea.

If you want a little more freedom around the middle, a relaxed column cut gives a looser fit through the tummy while keeping the same elegant lines.

Find a Fabric That Loves the Beach

Alongside the silhouette, fabric makes or breaks comfort. Your gown should be breathable and light, yet withstand the heat and breeze of a destination wedding — not always an easy combination. Chiffon is our favorite: lightweight, cooling and gorgeous floating in the wind. Tulle gives a floaty, diaphanous look — pair it with a fitted bodice for a modern mermaid feel.

Lace matches the natural aesthetic of beach celebrations beautifully, usually appliquéd over a lightweight base. Just keep it airy — we all sweat through a wedding day, and a heavy lace gown that felt fine in the morning can become a drag by evening.

Delicate lace and a boho spirit suit the relaxed magic of the shore.

Whatever fabric you choose, prioritize breathability — your comfort across a long day matters as much as the look.

Which Beachy Look Suits Your Big Day?

Not every beach wedding is bohemian! With the fabric and silhouette chosen, it's time to find your look. Formal coastal weddings work beautifully with a few tweaks — swap black tie for lighter shades and breathable linen, and a satin halter gown looks glamorous while keeping you cool.

Boho is our favorite beach look: delicate floral lace, fine beading, a long flowing gown and fresh or dried flowers in your hair. For minimalist chic, let the surroundings shine with a simple chiffon or crepe gown that catches the breeze and creates drama in your photos.

Minimalist gowns let a breathtaking coastline do the talking.

Decide on the theme early — it quietly guides every later choice, from your veil to your bouquet.

Elevate the Look With Accessories

For the finishing touches, keep veils short — shoulder-length styles suit beachy gowns, while a chapel-length veil just drags through the sand. Coordinate the trim or hue with your dress. A floral crown or pearl headpiece works with almost any theme.

For jewelry, choose pieces that complement rather than overpower: delicate drop earrings, subtle chains and pendants — and nothing you'd be heartbroken to lose in the sand. Once your look is complete, share it (and your details) with guests on a free wedding website.
