How to Write Your Wedding Website Story
Our service has assisted tens of thousands of couples worldwide in planning their dream weddings!
Eliminate Writer's Block & Effortlessly Write Your Story from the Heart
We've all read the wedding stories of friends and family members, and love them or loathe them, they gift guests a wonderful introduction to your celebrations. And help to make a wedding website template much more personal. When putting together our own website builder, we made sure to give our users as much opportunity as possible to share their story because we know just how much those paragraphs are appreciated.
In our experience though, couples don't always find the act of putting together the 'Our Story' section of their wedding website an easy task. There are those natural writers who can turn any average walk down memory lane into an epic love story. But on the whole, we have found that many couples do tend to struggle to put their story together. Which is totally understandable, and why we thought we'd come up with this expert guide to writing a wedding website story.
What is the Our Story Section on a Wedding Website?
The 'Our Story' section of a wedding website is your opportunity to share your love story thus far. From first date, to the proposal story and any parts in between you care to share. And it can be written in any style. Funny, heartfelt, emotional, even factual. It doesn't matter, as long as it feels like it's coming from you. So don't even think about asking AI to write your love story for you!

Do You Need a Story on Your Wedding Website?
For us, absolutely, even if it's just a few lines. One of the major reasons why we believe this section of any wedding website is so important is because it's likely a lot of your guests won't know you that well. Do you know all of your partner's friends and family? Their plus-one's? Probably not. Which is why being able to pre-introduce yourselves, and share a little about your milestones is so essential, as it makes everyone feel part of the celebration.
'Our Story' also helps set the tone for the entire celebration, and gets people excited about your wedding date! It's like reading the synopsis of a great movie that hasn't premiered yet. You're desperate to see it, counting down the days until its release. A good wedding website story will have the same effect on your guests.

How to Write Your Wedding Website Story
Ready to ditch wedding planning for a moment and take a trip down memory lane? Here's how to pen a beautiful wedding website love story that'll enthrall your guests.
Start with Introductions
It can be tempting to leap straight into the most romantic parts of your journey, but it's important to set the scene first. Otherwise your readers will not be as invested as you'd like. Our advice would be to introduce yourselves separately. A little passage dedicated to each other that explains who you are, where you're from, where you're at, and offers something about you as an individual. Things like hobbies, interests, loves in life (apart from your fiancée).
Set the scene for those who potentially don't know you that well. And write your own story, before diving into your shared journey.
Begin Your Story at the Start
Unless you're a bona fide Stephen King who can tease readers by starting at the end of your love story, rather than at the beginning. It's much safer to start off with how you met. What was your first meeting like? Did you like your partner straight away? How did your initial date/meeting evolve into? How did they say yes? What was moving in together like?
It may well be that you haven't talked, or thought too much about your relationship timeline up to now, which may make the story writing process a little tricky. If that's the case, sit down together and agree on the most important milestones together. Create a roadmap for your story, and you'll find telling it is a lot easier to piece together.
You Don't Have to Write in 3rd Person
We know that traditionally 'Our Story' sections are typically written in 3rd person, but we actually think they sound better in 1st person. Chiefly because it helps to draw the reader in, creating more of a conversational vibe between you and the reader. Something you just don't get when writing in the third person.
If you do feel like sticking with tradition, perhaps write your shared story in 3rd person, and then break away from that to write the separate sections about each other in the first person. You may find it easier to write this way, especially when sharing details about yourself. That often feels weird to do when not done in the first person!

Write Conversationally and in Your Voice
It's important to show personality in your writing. Type from the heart using the language (within reason) you would use every day. Those members of your guest list who do not know you well will never be able to get a gauge on you as a person if you sound stiff, or robotic.
If you're struggling to relax your writing, step away. Don't force something that should be fun and celebratory. Come back to it when you feel a little less stressed, then start writing without thinking too much. We've found that overwriting is usually the best practice. It's much easier to edit down a chunk of text rather than keep things concise on the fly.
Short and Sweet is Always Best
Avoid boring your wedding guests with long passages of text, however fun and engaging your prose is. Your closest friends and family will be happy to read however much you write, but others will grow tired.
Your shared story should be no longer than 300 words, as should your individual sections, if that's how you're laying things out. Both need to be broken up into paragraphs of no more than 4 to keep readers engaged and make the text easy to read.

Write For Those You Don't Know Well
If you were a theater nerd like us during high school, you'll know that actors always say 'perform for those at the back of the auditorium'. And this advice can certainly be applied to writing a wedding website about us section. Because those people at the back of your wedding day ceremony will likely not know the ins and outs of your journey. And will therefore need details to truly get an idea of your vibe.
Share your story as if you're talking to a complete stranger, and avoid any inside jokes you know plus-ones and relatives just won't understand. That way everyone will they're on the same page when they witness you tying the knot.
'We Can't Wait to Celebrate With You'!
We feel the 'Our Story' section should always finish not with a statement like 'and the rest is history', and more like 'let's write the next chapter together'. Something more invitational. As if you've introduced yourself to everyone, and now you're bringing them along for the ride!
It's important to show just how excited you are to share your upcoming big day with every single member of your wedding party. And make even passing acquaintances feel like part of the family.
